Day 2 – Giao to Rates

I must start with a report on last nights dinner. We went to a local family dinner house that was so delightful. It was traditional Portuguese menu owned and run by a husband and wife (plus there 7-8 year old daughter is “helping”. )

They were so accommodating and proud of their cafe and food. We totally loved every moment.

This morning it was hard to leave the lovely accommodations of Casa Mindela. The farm has been in the family for many generations and it is lovely to see how beautifully the next generation has restored the manor house and barns into lovely accommodations. At 70€ a night for three people in an small apartment, it was an amazing bargain. The price also included a lovely breakfast.

Our hike today wove us through the Portuguese countryside. We were mainly in back roads and a few trails through farmland and new development. There are several alternative routes because of busy small roads with fast driving and zero shoulders. We decided to choose the alternate routes and we’re not disappointed.

Our journey took us across two bridges built in Roman times. It is humbling to first have the privilege of walking day after day, experiencing the simplicity of the moment; then to walk over such an ancient path….

We defiantly didn’t take enough breaks during the day so tomorrow we will be better. Feet were tired and bodies had some sore spots from packs. Tomorrow is a longer hike so backs are getting down to the minimum.

My tendon is almost pain free. I cannot quite believe that the hiking is helping.

We walked by a small elementary school and were inspired by the show of support for Ukraine and the lovely notes on the fence about what they are thankful for.

Our accommodations are very nice tonight. We went out to dinner and ended up on a local café’s face book page!

Sangria and beer for the tired hikers!

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. You are all such an inspiration. I love your clips Candice, your inspiration even comes through in your uplifting voice describing the wonderment of what is on the journey ahead. May your fleet footed adventure continue with joy!

  2. Another day of gorgeous scenery (and food). I’m living vicariously through you all. Thank you for the update!

  3. I am looking forward to the rest of your trip. It is always amazing to me how these local families take us in, feed us, give us a great room, talk with us, and it all from the heart. Sure they make a buck, but their real pleasure is talking with the travelers that happen by.

    1. It truly is Dave. Please have been so helpful to use. Showing us “a short cut that saved us a kilometer or back tracking, opening their homes. I feel blessed.
