What Doesn’t Hurt Tonight?

Hummmm, 17 miles was not a great idea for our first day; especially in Galacia which is nothing but one hill after another.

We were so excited this morning when the alarm went off at 6:00 am. A whole day ahead of us, of doing what we love; hiking, eating and drinking.

Ready for the 1st day. It will be a
the constant search and find for a couple of days until I get everything where it makes sense.
The city was just awakening as we left Lugo.

Our day started with a bit of rain, but that subsided quickly and then just an occasional shower here and there. I am not sure if it is just better to have rain all day because of the loading and unloading of your pack and personal rain gear all day. Nothing seems settled.

Galacia is very hilly. Every time that you think that you are at the top, there seems to be a bend that hides another climb. The pitches are steep with very few switch backs. Tonight the quads, calves, knees, gluts, triceps (from poles), back (from 20# pack), shoulders….you get the picture…..will be screaming at me And then there is my Achilles’ tendon!!!! Yes, all self inflicted. If I wake up tomorrow being able to move after 17 miles, then #Endurox Recovery drink worked it’s magic.

We have already met some wonderful people on the trail. A Camino Angel hung out of his apartment window this morning to tell us we had missed an arrow and to go back a half block. A seasoned pilgrim, Pepe, from Porto Rico giving us words of wisdom about enjoying the journey, which he seems to be doing well into his 80’s.

Many cafés and bars have not made it through the pandemic so we went much too long without a food break. We need to be better prepared tomorrow. It is difficult to walk this many miles without food and beer!

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
