Day 7- La Mesa to Castro

I knew Josh was multitalented , but now he can add Madidore to his resume.

Our day started with a massive climb of about 1500 feet, and when we reached the top, it was magical because the fog was below us. It looked like we were walking into a a white sea. Unfortunately, we were walking into a cow who decided she didn’t want to make way for two pilgrims. We stepped off the trail to give her room, and she charged! I whipped out my pole and snapped her on the muzzle. She kept coming. I stepped back on a steep slope and went down. Josh stepped between the “mad cow” and me. He was trying to help me up. She charged again. He took his towel off of his neck and whipped it around like a Matador, and then the other two cows decided they wanted to get in on that event. Finally, they decided they had won and moved on. Josh unwound me, helped me get out of the sticker bushes, and we moved on. Of course, now I’m limping again after being pain-free with my knee. And I have 1500 feet of downhill to the dam.

We made it to the dam. There was beer. There was food. There was a beautiful view and great people to talk to, and then off to climb the mountain on the other side of the dam.

Finally, the uphill was done and we made it to another little village to sit and have a beer with some Camino Friends.

As we left the village toward our destination, Josh looked out into the mountains and he said, “There is going to be a thunderstorm”. I couldn’t believe it because it was a perfect day and the clouds were in the distance. Well, the thunderstorm hit and we were caught in a downpour out in the middle of the field. Our path is full of mud we’re trying to walk as fast as we can to finish out our 2 1/2 miles that we have left, everything is wet because we didn’t have time to be totally prepared.

We finally arrived at our charming Casa. We had a whole apartment to ourselves trying, tried to dry everything out, which didn’t happen; keeping a good attitude always.😳

We had a delightful dinner and breakfast with our Camino group that we’ve been walking with for the last couple days, and then off to bed thankful to have survived this day.

Buen Camino…I know the lessons that I am being taught will be revealed sooner rather than later.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
