Day 34 – Camponaraya to Trabadelo

We spent a major portion on our day on pavement. As I was complaining to myself about it, Uncle Charles came to mind. For those of you whom never had the pleasure of meeting him, he was the least complaining guy in the world. My son, Josh and I had the pleasure of spending time daily with him, especially the last years of his life. Every day I would say, “How are you today, Uncle Charles?”  And he would always say, “By golly, I just can’t complain.”  This was a guy who was in his 90’s dying of pancreatic cancer. So Uncle Charles, your positive attitude put a smile on my face today when all “ten little piggies” were squealing.

The middle part of the day we walked through vineyards again.

We also walked through some beautiful villages today.

                                   Bakers preparing the village bread

In one small village I had the best soup of the journey. A rustic cabbage and onion hearty mountain elixir.

My Camino Moment was coming out of this cafe and getting my pack back on. I had greeted a young man in a Tom and Jerry T-shirt and desert camouflage pack, assuming American military (but French). I felt my pack become as light as a feather and he was holding it for me to get in on. At the end of a long day, it was such a kind gesture.

We ended the day in a tiny village, in a sweet albergue sharing a wonderful pilgrim meal with four Americans; two young women who were friends in college and a father and college age son (WWU)  from Washington. A great day,  plus it rained!

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. What a wonderful good morning surprise! Where did this post come from? I haven’t a clue….I saved every one until this weekend. Yes I did and now when I’m looking for a new morning boost this popped up. Probably just a challenging reminder of the necessity of a good boost!
