Big Day…..Saturday

It was a full day in Cinque Terre! Rain….a little sun….lots of walking. We started out by jumping on the train and forgetting to validate our train ticket, which can result in a fine. We jumped off at Cornigula, the next village south, hoping to validate and jump back on. Of course we didn’t make it in time so we had to wait for the next train. Minor problem.

Then on to Riomaggiore. Fresh pasta. So beautiful. My daily gelato….pistachio. We hiked up and down the many streets finding little treasures along our meanderings. At the top of a hill and on the edge of the cliff we found an elementary school. This is us coming down the students’ path.

We wandered out onto the La Via dell’Amore, one of the major walking trails between the villages. It was damaged severely during the 2011 storm and has not reopened.

Then on to the train to Monorola where we walked the old trail in both directions as far as was still open. Then we explored the village before heading back to our home base, Vernazza.Opps, did I accidentally post another gelato? It must have been Brenda’s second one of the day😎😉

Not getting enough stairs and walking we went to the top of the hill behind Vernazza. It is quite a climb but worth the picture opportunity. Then onto tackling the hike to the top of the fort. All was going well until the lightening and thunderstorm hit. We found ourselves “trapped”in a cave on the sea wall (we didn’t want to get soaked).

After Mother Nature’s excitement we headed for a light dinner at a small cafe in town. 7 miles of stairs and cobblestones today.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  2. So stunning, remembering some of the topography. I have revalidated that I will go back in the next five years. Foood pictures are so good, you can almost taste it. We are all drooling back here!!

  3. My legs are tired reading this. 🙂 So beautiful, and those tomatoes looked heavenly.
