And We are Off…

Always a must! “Don’t let the bed bugs bite!”

After much ado about nothing, we are off. Those last minute details always leaves me with a little anxiety. Not about the trip itself, but usually about making bad decisions with packing; always throwing in “just in cases”. My pack is at 17 pounds without water. Not too bad. It actually feels great, but then I have only carried it through the airport, not 14 miles.

Randy took us to the airport so we had a 3:30 am wake up. This will be a good thing because I plan on sleeping the trip away after Dallas. We arrive in the morning in Madrid and have a full day of travel ahead of us.

We had to start the morning with a libation. I signed up for preferred TSA, something new, and of course it took twice as long. If there is slow line, I am always in it!” Then I had wrapped my tendon with KT tape and it set off the TSA alarm. Next thing I knew I was short of being strip searched. I was patted down, all carry on and backpack opened and wiped for traces of explosives. Of course all was fine, but not a great way to start the morning. Maybe it would be advised not to wrap an injury with KT TAPE before flying. 😎

Almost 11 hours into our journey. The trip to the airport from the coast truly adds time ito our journey, but there was no traffic and it was a smooth trip. After watching a good movie and then a very weird one, slept for a few hours, now ready for Europe.

The Camino is already sending its love. We had out first Buen Camino from a fellow passenger in line at the gate. She had some the Fránces in 2017. We shared a few stories and it reminded me of the bonding facet of the Camino.

As I was exiting the plane I met Anna and Mary; fellow camigrinas. We shared a taxi into Santiago and then Mary joined us for tapas and wine. They are both starting the Frances at Sarria this week. The Camino always provides us with interesting people.

In a few hours I will have been up for twenty four hours. I think it is time to wrap this up and go to bed. Tomorrow is another travel day. Lugo here we come.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
