Day 2 – Orisson to Roncevalles

Today was a great hiking day. Lots of elevation but a variety of terrain. I walked alone most if the day and it felt wonderful to just put one step in front of the other.

The only drawback was the wind. The good news is that the extra weight I didn’t want on my body probably helped me from getting blown over the side of the trail. I literally had to catch myself with my pole out to my side to keep from getting knock down. And to top it off, it was a headwind as we were climbing a mountain.

The wind also almost blew my earrings off!

Today I had a first. A horse in the free range area came over to greet me.

After the climb came the downhill that went on and on. I had to retie my boots to stabilize my heels so that my toes didn’t jam the end of my shower so much. The wooded areas were magical and I was totally alone most the downhill because the people in the Pilgrim office in SJPP were very insistant that the Camino downhill was too dangerous. I had done in twice before and never wanting to not follow the Camino route, decided to do it. I was happy that I did!

I got the top bunk. The worst part is climbing up with sore feet.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. I knew there was a good reason to maintain my current weight! Were you thinking on the way up, “This will make a great story (if I make it)! And you did!
