What an interesting little town. It is tiny yet a UNESCO sight. The caves of the Sierra de Atapuerca contain a rich fossil record of the earliest human beings in Europe, from nearly one million years ago and extending up to the Common Era. Only 172 people live in this important archeological site. They also restored the wetland for migrating birds between Africa and Europe, have a huge observatory, and are working in ornithological tourism.
Getting here by foot was no easy task. Up and over mountains. A 2 mile start of the day up a grade of between 7 and 12 percent the entire way and then down and up again.
Even though we had a moment of sun day was threatening rain, and right before we arrived into town, the skies opened.
our ALBERGUE was quite charming. We had curtains on our bugs, and I believe that the owner had done a lot of the handwork himself in restoring the building. There was a lot of thoughtful hooks and useful stools and benches for tired pilgrims. We had dinner in a charming hotel. The chef was excited about his food and it was delicious.
on the videos, please don’t make a judgment on how long it takes me to get from point a to point B. Sometimes I forget to turn my watch on sometimes I forget turn it off and I never stop it when I am stop for a break or lunch. So this disclaimer is so that you don’t think that truly I’m only walking 1.5 to 2 mph throughout the day😎
Who in the hell is going to make any judgment on how fast or slow you are going???? Everyone has deep admiration for you doing this journey…. !!!!! Keep up the fabulous trek and stay safe !!!!
Hi Candy, I tried to leave a comment on WordPress and don’t believe I was successful. Firstly, congratulations on your Camino walk! I feel like after doing my first Camino, solo, in July, I have a broader lens to take in your current experience with. Of course every Camino, and everyone’s Camino, is unique and special. But/and it’s fun to read about your experience from the vantage point of recently having had my own experience. Buen Camino!
I liked it enough and my hip held up enough that Steven and I just decided that we will walk the Frances’ in 2024.
Question – are you staying in mostly the same villages and towns that you have stayed in before or are you intentionally trying to stay in new towns? I suspect you may have some favorite lodging places that you want to return to, but generally are you choosing a slightly different route/pace?
