Denmark – Day 2

For those who have not followed my blog over the years…where have you been🤣…I will explain my Danish Family. In 1987 Maria was a foreign exchange student in Montesano. We were her “default” family when things were not matched well with her first host family. In a few short months she became sister/daughter/cousin to all of us. The love affair never waned and we have shared our lives together since with weddings, births of babies (Julius and Olivia) vacations and visits.

What a perfect day today! Maria had appointment north of Copenhagen so we had a lovely drive through the Danish countryside.

0n our way we dropped Olivia off at a bus stop to head to school. Today she has one of her oral finals, in English. To graduate high school the students are randomly assigned eight a subjects they have studied in high school. They then prove either orally or in a written exam, whichever they randomly draw, what they have learned in their time at school. They are asked questions by the board and have to defend their work. Olivia seems relaxed and ready!

Arriving in Hillerød, Maria dropped me at the King’s Summer Castle. I walked the grounds and toured part of the castle. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful walk.

For lunch we returned to Copenhagen where we met the family for lunch at the restaurant where Julius works.

We ended the day with snacks at the golf course and cafe where Olivia works. An evening walk home through the tiny forest and to bed!

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. What a wonderful way to transition from our life here in the US to meeting up with some more of your “family” and a different way of life. The journey is off to a good start!

  2. Candi, thanks for sharing the story about Maria and her family….. you are very lucky to have such a lasting relationship ❤️
