Day 26 – Shahgun to  El Burgo Ranera

This was my least favorite part of the Camino today. It was like listening to the same song over and over and over…for 15 km the same trees on my left, same small road on my right, freeway in the background with train tracks beyond that.

                                                      on and on and on….

I tried first, distracting my negative mood by contemplating the wild flowers and what the farmers were doing. That worked for a bit and I felt brighter.

How could this beautiful contrast not improve my outlook

Then two dragon flies (the first I have seen) landed in front of me and brought back tender and funny memories of Heather and Josh.  Then the singing started…it is strange what songs and memories come to mind when you are mindless….

Just when I thought I cannot take this path one more km, walkers started coming our way.  That is a sure sign of a village is near.  So many people walk daily here.

Sure enough in about 3 km we walked into a town and had the greatest visit with the owner of the bar/cafe. She was delightful, an attorney who met her husband on her Camino and they decided to move to this small town and start a cafe. Eventually they will remodel a very old building into an albergue for pilgrims.   I knew then there was a reason for us to be on this route!

We have a nice albergue with a unique hospitalero from Italy. One minute he ignores you and the next,  he is helpful. I cannot tell if he wants his beds filled or not.  Two women cyclists whom started in Holland got furious with him and road off.

                                                  palapas but no playa
                                                         my bed for the night

Today I noticed that it has been a long time since I appreciated or noticed when the dry grass starts to be moved by a very gentle wind.  It may only last for 30 seconds but it feels like a wonderful gift when you are walking on a hot day; and you notice.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
