Day 29 Leon to Vallar de Mazarife

Debby and I stopped for a coffee on the way out of Leon and our friend Georgi walked in behind us!  She was staying at the entrance into Leon and we stayed in the center, so the perfect timing was crazy.

                                      Goodbye Leon, Debby, Georgi, Candi

Today’s walk was interesting and enjoyable. My mind and body were glad to go up and  down a few hills again. The Camino split again today and we did the green route which was away from the highway although still was on a road at times.

Some days everything  seems to be aligned right on the Camino. Today was not that day for me. I have acquired a “knot” in my shoulder-blade that has become quite painful, although I can stretch my way through the day to get it to settled in. And I made the mistake of stowing one of my poles between my backpack top and lost it today.  I asked an American Pilgrim if she saw it.  She said yes it was laying on the trail but she “didn’t pick it up because she didn’t know what she would do with it”.  Since everyone on the trail was ending in this small town today, I wish she would have carried it in for a few kilometers😢.  My mistake and maybe a blessing right now since I was trying to not use the left one anyway. I always know tomorrow will be better.

A charming doorway on the Camino

We have met an inspirational American woman and man today. I am not sure how they met (maybe through the Sierra Club), but they are friends and he his “guiding” her on the Camino. She is 72 and legally blind. She has been losing her sight for some years now. She is very independent but needs guidance with the terrain. He is respectful of her limitations and independence.  We all are staying at the same albergue and had lunch together. She was a physical therapist for special needs children, infant through 3 years old and he is a retired elementary teacher on a year travel adventure.

Tomorrow I will be more grateful for my strong body and not allow my thoughts to dwell on my shoulders.

A great dinner prepared by our albergue tonight. Mixed green salad, gazpacho, paella, and crepes[

Randy said we are almost at 500km!

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. Wow, 311 miles (500 km) is like walking from Montesano to Roseburg, Oregon. Not to mention your shoulder pain, but I’m thinking of your poor feet. Stay healthy and stay motivated!!!

  2. Thank you for sharing. I hope your shoulder gets better. I always enjoy meeting new people when I travel.
