Day -2 Negreia to St. Mariña

Fours hours of the day was in the forest climbing and the rest was on pavement next to highways and corn fields with no shade and in the high 80’s. And yet we did it and felt like it was a good hike, after two beers and a shower.

I noticed something today. When I get into a hike that I am not particularly enjoying, songs from my childhood start popping into my head. It must be a self soothing mechanism. Yesterday the theme song for “Oscar Meyer Weiner’s got me through the mountain climb!

I think people see me as very old on this Camino. They are continually asking me if I am ok, or doing well. I find it thoughtful, yet annoying and a bit ageist. There are some pretty old guys on the trail and just taking their time doing their Camino and I don’t see the same concern.

Our albergue is very nice. They didn’t have a private room but the owner gave us a four bed dorm for just us. Karen had her first experience with paper sheets and pillow case. It was quite entertaining watching her.

The Albergue has a small cafe, but our appetites are not that great with the heat. I had a bowl of their lentil soup and that was perfect. Well, and a glass of vino blanco.

I don’t think the owner could have manage to get one lentil more in my bowl. Food is so inexpensive, wine and beer $1.25-$2.50, and portions are generous.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. I sympathize with the ageism. I could write a book! However, phooey on them. You’re out there having adventures and living your life!
