Day 5 – Pamplona to Puente La Reine

Today was hotter than yesterday and far less shade. For most of the day there was no wind to help. Needless to say, I am exhausted. I couldn’t even leave my bed for a beer!!! Luckily I ate my way through the countryside today, because there was also no going out for dinner.

This is my Camino Angel this morning. He was concerned that I would not make the right turn to join the Camino so walked me through the park and to place to turn onto the route. All the while, even though he had no English and I had a few Spanish words, he kept up a conversation.

I had to give myself a reality check first thing this am. I was walking on a path that was filled with recycled tile pieces. I came up with the great idea that I will just pick up piece cross Spain and make a stepping stone home. Since my pack is already too heavy, I shut that “great idea” down immediately. Well, after picking up three pieces, maybe four or….

Today is was a day that was given to remind me this is a pilgrimage, not a vacation, not about easy or fun, it is to know you can endure. It dosn’t matter that you are not the first in but you made it. You did not give up.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
