Day 9 – Viana to Navarrete

I have had a hard time recognizing the villages (cities) in the Rioja region. The new economic growth in this area is amazing and a bit sad to see the charm replaced by high rise apartments and miles of industrial complexes.

I am noticing a great improvement in my hill climbing and overall endurance. I am less inclined to cursing when I see steep, long climb in front of me.

We are now in the Rioja region of Spain. A bit of all surfaces to walk on. It defiantly keeps my attention.

Last night was spent in a municipal albergue. They are very inexpensive, 10 euro and basic but are run by very personable volunteers from around the world. After our pilgrims’s meal we visited the church. I don’t think I have ever seen so much gold on an alter before.

Jolanda and I are walking together most of the day. Tomorrow we share a double room in a private albergue. Much quieter sleeping I hope.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
