Day 22 – Leon to La Virgin del Camino

As I left Leon this am I ran into a Camino friend for sharing an albergue in . She had injured her ankle in the downhill into Zubiri and here she is still waking the Camino with an injury. We walked together until just outside the La Virgin del Camino, then she was on her way another 20k. I admire her tenacity. She has her eye on the end right now.

Today was a short day because I had this town booked ahead before I went to Leon for a rest. The problem with the September Camino is there is no spontaneity that I had in my past Caminos. No walking into a town, no booking the night before. I am now booked clear through to Santiago.

Today was 7 miles of walking through cities and suburbs. The city I am staying in is all new. I have not found an old town. So to be here from 10:30 am is a bit boring. Definately almost a rest day.

But the Camino provided. I stopped for breakfast at a bar by my hostel. The proprietor came to clear my plate and ask in if I was staying in town (I think…he was speaking Spanish only) He told me to go inside and they had my key to my room! So I registered and went to my room hours before regular check in!

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
