Day 9 – Logrono to Madrid to Dublin to Seattle

As I coughed my way into the evening, unable to think about leaving my room for food, I decided to either find a hospital or a plane home.

The start of my travels home.

Fortunately there was a plane leaving from Logrono to Madrid early in the morning. I could fly from Madrid to Dublin and Dublin home with all connections working. So, 20 hours later, Randy picked me up in Seattle and two hours later I was in my own bed (which had never felt so good). There I stayed to recover for a week. I had a virus that went into an infection, had lost 15 pounds, so I made the right decision to come home.

Interestingly, I have no regrets. I had a wonderful few days in Denmark with my bonus daughter and family, learned that I can raise the “white flag” without feeling defeated, had a beautiful walk in Spain for 9 days, and now have a summer at home. Life is good.

The Camino always teaches me something new. This time I was challenged more than the normal physical challenge of distant walking. I found that at 75 years old I can still dig deep and keep moving forward one step at a time and then know when it is time to listen to your body.

Aging is a peculiar phase of life that takes some getting use to. I’ve heard women, particularly, express feeling invisible, and I believe I may have been experiencing something similar. Over the past few years, I’ve felt like I’ve lost a part of myself. Fortunately, I found it during this short walk. Solo walking is good for your soul.

Now I am home, and yes, planning my next Camino.

Thank you all for following my short but sweet Camino journey.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.

  1. From a 70 year old who just completed the Norte over 41 days, I hear you. I gave myself some grace this time around and used the courier service and had Galiwanders make my reservations. So glad I did! You are amazing!

  2. Candy, thank you for this window into your life journey, often through the framework of a Camino walk. I am inspired by your “no regrets” and honor your listening to your body. I believe Camino walks nurture that deep listening. Congratulations on a great Camino!
