Day 1 on the Frances

St Jean to Borda

Off on my fourth Frances.

It was perfect temperature for hiking a 2300 foot elevation gain in under 5 miles! The church bells were ringing and the birds were sing me out onto the Camino this morning.

All was beautiful until the reality of the climb started to invade my moment of bliss.

✅note to self – train for your next Camino.

Reality hit within the first 10 minutes and didn’t end until I arrived at my destination. So my day of climbing 2377 feet in elevation within six miles was spent counting out 50 steps at a time, sucking air, and looking at the beautiful Basque counryside.

I had my first encounter with some free roaming cattle today. After my experience on the Primativo last year, I was bit more wary of the situation since we were passing within a few feet of each other on a confined trail. We all showed respect for each other and shared the trail peacefully.

What a welcome site

A day at Borda was welcoming, organized and full of Camino love with a few spicing women mixed in. Conversation was interesting and full of laughs and heartbreak. A true Camino experience.

I am a woman of age reinventing myself in my 70’s. I owned a restaurant for 36 years, was a high school CTE instructor in Culinary Arts, and I’m now looking for my next chapter in life. I am restless. I do know that hiking, travel, and sharing my love of food and wine will play a part in my new adventures.
